Global Militarisation Index (Codebook V3) [bicc report/GMI]
Abstract
The Global Militarisation Index (GMI) 2023, is a comprehensive analytical tool that objectively measures and ranks militarization levels across countries by comparing military expenditure (relative to GDP and health spending), military and paramilitary personnel (relative to population and physicians), and the availability of heavy weapons per capita. Using data from SIPRI, the IMF, WHO, and IISS, the GMI aggregates these indicators—weighted by significance—into a normalized index, categorizing nations into five militarization levels (from "very strong" to "very weak") and enabling historical and cross-country comparisons since 1990.
