During his studies, Maurice put his main interest in Middle East politics, development cooperation and peace and conflict studies. Among other practical experiences, he interned for the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in Yemen in 2009/10 and worked on Yemen with the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) in the context of Arms Control and Missile Proliferation in the Middle East. After finalising his M.A. on the perspectives of power-sharing in Iraq, he worked in Egypt for a couple of months. He started working for bicc in the beginning of 2015 in a project on sustainable energy trajectories in the MENA-region. Together with two partner organisations, Maurice conducted research on electricity generating technology impacts and acceptance mainly in Tunisia. In 2018, he switched to researching prevention of radicalisation and took over the responsibility for CoRE-NRW in 2019. For ten years, Maurice did outreach social work with underprivileged youths. An experience that added greatly to his perspective of the issue of radicalisation and prevention.
Research profile
His work focuses on radicalisation and extremism, involving different ideologies like extremist Islamism and right-wing extremism as well as prevention, mainly in Germany. He conducted research on local challenges and structures of prevention. Currently, he manages the multi- and transdisciplinary research network “Connecting Research on Extremism in North Rhine-Westphalia”, CoRE-NRW, which brings together researchers, practitioners and state authorities on issues revolving around the topics of radicalisation and extremism. Maurice is editor of the CoRE-NRW publication series. Prior to this, he has worked on sustainable energies in the MENA region. Beyond project-related topics at BICC, Maurice has further interests mainly on racism and integration.
