Senior Researcher

Biography

Before joining bicc, Oyewole Oginni was a researcher at the Centre for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, where his research project examined civilian loyalty and agency in JAS/ISWAP insurgents-controlled areas in the Lake Chad Basin. Over the past decade, he has contributed to different EU-funded projects addressing violent conflicts in Africa and coordinated the development of a qualitative Africa Crisis Index as Africa Lead for nearly a decade. At the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), he served as a Technical Expert, supporting the EU Global Refugee Facility (Lives in Dignity Grant Facility) in the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) and the EU’s inaugural SUIDAC programme in Sub-Saharan Africa (DRC, Uganda and Ethiopia) for four years. Other technical roles include high-level policy engagement with heads of state, parliamentarians, and international development agencies to advance local ownership of stabilisation efforts in crisis-affected regions.

Research profile

I am interested in the societal impacts of armed conflicts, security politics and reforms in countries/regions battling with the scene of continuous violent conflicts. I often combine ethnographic approach with other social empirical methods to understand conflict dynamics and system, civilian interaction with NSAGs and the state’s tactical and strategic approaches to a complex security landscape. In my current role at BICC, I collaborate with regional and multilateral actors (AU, UN-DPO, LCBC) and local research institutions to understand and provide concrete policy recommendations on how regional approaches to dealing with armed conflicts in the Lake Chad Basin region shapes systems of conflict/peace and how NSAGs contribute this system or are affected by them.
