Hartmut Küchle

Biography

Hartmut Küchle studied Sociology, Economic History and Economics at the University of Tübingen from 1965 until 1970 (Diplom-Volkswirt; equivalent to MA) with traineeships in Finland, the United States, South Africa and India. He wrote his PhD thesis on economic theories of crisis (Dr. rer.pol.). From 1970 until 1973, he worked at the German Institute of Corresponding Studies (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen as editor of course on economics. From 1973 to 1997, Helmut Küchle was Senior Researcher at the Economic and Social Research Institute (Wirtschafts- und Sozialwisenschaftliches Institut des Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbundes WSI des DGB) in Düsseldorf, where his main interests were business cycle analysis, economic forecasts, foreign trade and foreign direct investment leading to numerous publications. Moreover, he compiled and edited the WSI-Mitteilungen , a journal for social and economic studies. From 1978 to 2002, he was member of the Foreign Trade Advisory Council ( Außenwirtschaftsbeirat ) at the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi) in Bonn and Berlin. From 1997 until 2008, Hartmut Küchle was Senior Researcher and Project Manager at BICC. He was in charge of analyzing the European defense industry. In particular, he focused on Article 296 of the Amsterdam Treaty, which excludes the defense market from the single European market. He was involved in answering the Commission’s questionnaire on Article 296 and, thereafter, was invited by the European Parliament to speak as expert in the hearing on the Commission’s Green Paper. Currently, he is Associate Researcher.
